Black Apprentice Network: 96 Qualified Partnership Opportunities from 41,000+ UK Decision Makers

Campaign Overview

Black Apprentice Network, a Black-led community that coaches underrepresented candidates into UK apprenticeships, graduate schemes, and internships, partnered with Lead Gen Jay to build an outbound engine capable of reaching the decision makers who own early careers hiring at British employers.

Co-founded by Elijah Olanipekun, the organisation already had the proof: candidates it coaches were winning offers from Big 4 firms on merit, and its existing employer partners included Accenture, KPMG, Deloitte, EY, Norton Rose Fulbright, Freshfields, BT, Tesco, Standard Chartered, National Grid, Arm, and the NHS. What it lacked was a repeatable way to open conversations with the next hundred employers. Early careers teams are small — typically two to four people sorting thousands of applications a cycle — and they are heavily gatekept by agencies and long-standing supplier lists. That made disciplined, relevance-first cold email the right instrument to find the teams whose apprenticeship and graduate intake was genuinely under pressure.

Beginning with a strategy call on 4 May 2026 and a first campaign launch on 3 June 2026, Lead Gen Jay built and operated a segmented programme across two distinct offers. The apprenticeship offer targeted heads of early careers, early talent, and apprenticeships at accounting and consulting firms, law firms, and financial services businesses across England. A second undergraduate offer — covering graduate schemes, summer internships, and vacation schemes — launched on 3 July 2026 on its own dedicated sending infrastructure so the two propositions never competed for volume. On 16 July 2026, the strongest apprenticeship segment was rebuilt and relaunched as an optimised iteration, alongside a dedicated sequence against a client-supplied list of priority target employers. Those optimised campaigns were still actively sending as of the time of reporting.

Key Metrics

Across eight sequences running from June 2026 through early September 2026, the programme put Black Apprentice Network in front of tens of thousands of early careers decision makers and produced a steady pipeline of partnership conversations. The headline numbers across the full programme are as follows:

  • Total UK Decision Makers Contacted: 41,000+
  • Total Qualified Opportunities: 96
  • Genuine Human Replies: 486
  • Reply-to-Interested Conversion Rate: ~1 in 5 genuine replies (19.8%)
  • Bounce Rate: 2.16%
  • Total Unsubscribes: 64 (approximately 1 per 1,670 emails sent)
  • Sending Infrastructure: 100 dedicated mailboxes across 34 separate sending domains
  • Platform: Email Bison, with plain-text sending and open/link tracking disabled
  • Programme Duration: June 2026 – September 2026 (ongoing)

Filtering out out-of-office and automated responses leaves 486 genuine human replies. Of those, 96 converted into qualified opportunities — meaning nearly one in five real conversations flagged genuine interest in an apprenticeship or graduate partnership. For an audience this gatekept, that is an unusually strong reply-to-interest conversion rate, and it reflects how precisely the offer was landing on the right desks with the right framing.

Reaching that pipeline required serious infrastructure. The programme ran on 100 dedicated sending mailboxes spread across 34 separate sending domains, all warmed, monitored, and operated inside Email Bison. Plain-text sending was used throughout, with open and link tracking switched off to protect inbox placement. That spread is what allowed the team to contact more than 41,000 UK decision makers while holding the bounce rate to 2.16 percent and total unsubscribes to just 64 across the entire programme.

Best-Performing Campaign

Within the broader programme, the optimised Apprenticeships — Accounting and Consulting sequence stood out as the strongest performer on every dimension that matters, producing nearly half the programme's entire qualified pipeline from a single audience segment.

This sequence was the optimised 16 July rebuild of the original accounting and consulting campaign, and the comparison between the two iterations is the clearest evidence in the programme that disciplined optimisation pays:

  • Original Sequence — Contacts Reached: 11,932
  • Original Sequence — Qualified Opportunities: 37
  • Original Sequence — Interested Rate: 16.7%
  • Optimised Rebuild — Contacts Reached: 12,353
  • Optimised Rebuild — Qualified Opportunities: 43
  • Optimised Rebuild — Reply Rate: 5.38%
  • Optimised Rebuild — Interested Rate: 20.2%

Better targeting and tighter copy lifted opportunity volume by 16 percent and reply-to-interest conversion by more than three percentage points on the same audience. The 5.38 percent reply rate is exceptional for cold outbound to senior decision makers. Accounting and consulting firms proved to be the segment with both the volume of early careers hiring and the internal autonomy to say yes to a partnership without a full procurement cycle — exactly the combination the segmentation work was designed to isolate.

Success Factors

Two Offers, Two Sets of Infrastructure

Apprenticeships and undergraduate schemes are bought by overlapping teams but sold on different logic, so they were never merged into a single sequence. Each offer received its own copy, its own lead lists, and — critically — its own 50 dedicated mailboxes. This meant the newer undergraduate proposition could be tested at a controlled pace without borrowing volume or deliverability from the proven apprenticeship campaigns. When the undergraduate sequences ramped, the apprenticeship pipeline never dipped.

Question-Led Openers Instead of Pitches

Every first email opened with a genuine operational question rather than a claim: how the employer was handling apprenticeship application quality that cycle, how it was moving diversity numbers without changing the hiring bar, or how it was getting face time with applicants before the sift. The proof point — that a Big 4 firm received 15 apprenticeship offers from the coached community in a single cycle — arrived as context for the question rather than as a headline. That framing is what produced a 19.8 percent interested rate from decision makers who ignore almost all cold outreach.

A Real Three-Way Subject Line Test at Volume

Each sequence ran a full 15-step build with nine first-email variants: three subject lines crossed against three body angles, with threaded follow-ups throughout. The test surfaced a clear and actionable preference. The two company-specific subject lines — "{Company} apprenticeships" and "Early careers at {Company}" — converted genuine replies into qualified opportunities at 19.7 and 21.0 percent respectively, compared to 15.8 percent for the generic "Apprenticeship application quality" line. Naming the employer in the subject line was worth roughly a third more conversion — a finding that now carries into every future sequence built on this programme.

Sharp, Industry-Clustered ICP Definition

Rather than blasting one undifferentiated list of early careers titles across England, audiences were clustered by industry into accounting and consulting, legal, and financial services, then filtered to heads and managers of early careers, early talent, apprenticeships, and graduate recruitment at employers large enough to run a structured intake. A fourth sequence ran against a list of priority target employers supplied directly by the client. The clustering made performance differences visible and actionable: accounting and consulting led the programme clearly, while the legal segment — at only 2,031 contacts — showed enough resistance to warrant pausing rather than scaling.

Permission-Based Calls to Action

No sequence asked for a meeting in the first email. Every call to action was a permission ask, offering to send a short rundown or a one-pager on how a live Insight Event runs. The harder ask — twenty minutes on the calendar — was held back until the third email and only after two lighter touches. Lowering the cost of a yes is a large part of why so many replies were positive rather than dismissive.

Iterative Optimisation, Not a One-Shot Launch

The programme's best numbers came from the rebuild, not the first send. After six weeks of live data, the winning segment was relaunched with a cleaner list and refined copy, and the underperforming legal and financial services sequences were paused so their sending capacity could be redirected. Running a managed programme rather than a one-shot campaign is what made that reallocation possible and what continues to compound results over time.

Conclusion

Black Apprentice Network's cold email programme demonstrates what a mission-led organisation can achieve in outbound when the targeting is sharp and the ask is honest. Across eight sequences running from June through early September 2026, industry-clustered ICP definition, question-led copy, a genuine nine-variant A/B test, and a 100-mailbox sending infrastructure reached more than 41,000 UK early careers decision makers and surfaced 96 qualified apprenticeship and graduate partnership opportunities — at an interested rate approaching one in five genuine replies.

The 96 qualified opportunities span exactly the mix of employers Black Apprentice Network set out to reach. On the enterprise end, interest came from decision makers at Morgan Stanley, Pinsent Masons, Freeths, SLB, Waitrose, Leeds Building Society, Sheffield Haworth, and Anthony Nolan, alongside UK public sector bodies including the Crown Commercial Service and the Forestry Commission. On the mid-market and specialist end, opportunities came from firms such as Optima Partners, Gate One, BMT, Eton Bridge Partners, Aire Logic, 3Keel, Inclusive Companies, Africa Practice, and RNS Chartered Accountants, plus a long tail of founder-led consultancies running their first structured early careers intake.

Beyond the direct pipeline, the programme generated durable market intelligence that Black Apprentice Network did not have before: which industries convert, which subject line construction earns the reply, which messaging angle carries the offer, and how UK early careers teams actually behave at volume. The optimised Accounting and Consulting sequence is now a proven, documented template that can be cloned and re-run against fresh employer data as it becomes available, and the undergraduate offer has its own validated infrastructure ready to scale behind it.

The optimised Accounting and Consulting sequence — with its 5.38 percent reply rate and 20.2 percent interested rate — provides a validated template for ongoing employer outreach. As Black Apprentice Network and Lead Gen Jay continue refining targeting and messaging across the apprenticeship and undergraduate offers, the partnership is positioned to convert reach into signed employer partners at meaningful scale through 2026 and beyond.
